Get to Know the Basics of Sikhi
The Five Symbols of Sikhi:
1. Kesh representing holiness, beauty provided naturally by
Waheguru, and is covered by a dastaar
2. Kirpan representing protection for the weak and fighting for
justice, not just for the self, but for all
3. Kara representing strength and endurance through thick and
thin. The soul of the Sikh must be strong as the steel s/he wears
4. Kangha representing cleanliness and order -- combing the hair
and cleansing the mind
5. Kachhera representing self-control against adultery
Most signified by Bhai Sahib Jarnal Singh Bhindranwale Ji is the Kesh representing a boon granted to the Sikhs, providing a sense of identity within a community.
Waheguru Sahib ji blessed everyone with the qualities that they were born with. What we do with those qualities is what reflects us. And as Bhai Ji states a few shabads from Gurbani to reflect this, it is worth while noticing that no matter what gender, caste, and religious background, we are all from a single origin, but what we do with ourselves is what defines ourselves and our future actions.
1984 Memorandum: "The Forgotten Sikhs"
Anti-Sikh riots victims asked Prime Minister
Manmohan Singh to reopen cases of the people who
died in the riots and bring them to justice. Punjab
Police had the files of their victims closed and gave
no justification to their (the victims) families, nor were
the cases opened in any trials.
The 1984 Sikh Riots was an event that no one
could ever forget. Many buildings and houses where
Sikhs/ Punjabis resided were burnt down, with people
inside them. Villages were raided and many lost loved
ones or their own lives. Head Police Officers of Punjab
had young lads abducted from their houses and
murdered under the accusation of being a terrorist
or drug suppliers.
Members of the India Against Corruption
organization, such as Prashant Bhushan, are stating
that " We are fighting against the system...(NDTV)."
This would be a significant thing to do, but we cannot
ignore the fact that our government is still corrupted.
However, 40,000 people have signed the memorandum, and with hopeful help from the MP, the suffering families might get the justification they deserve and the Punjab Police members that brought ill- faith to these families will be brought to justice.
